Living on Lake Whatcom in Bellingham is a truly special experience and a dream for anyone who loves being outdoors in the Pacific Northwest. These clients, a lovely couple with three children, had already built a custom home on their Northshore property and had prepared a foundation for an additional building, which they selected Highline to complete.

The added two-story detached unit consists of a three-stall garage on the lower floor and a hobby space on the upper. Modern exterior finishes echo the look of the home. The entry to the upper level has added interest and warmth with vertical wooden accent siding contrasting the primary fiber-cement lap siding.
A steep slope to the lot created an added challenge that called for retaining walls with significant engineering and a skilled excavation crew who could safely navigate that slope in close proximity to the existing house and second foundation. Our civil construction crew partnered with Alpine Engineering out of Bellingham, WA to provide a Redi-Rock solution built to last. Redi-Rock was supplied locally by Bode’s Precast in Whatcom County.

The area in front of the garage was thoughtfully designed to transform into a sports court. The basketball hoop or open skate space are obvious – less so are the hidden post receivers. Open ports. Attach posts. Connect net. Pickleball time.
Though Highline has expanded into commercial construction and excavation services in recent years, Trevor started the company in 2011 as one passionate craftsman with a spark for creating spaces with value measured in joy, laughter, and connection more than cost per square foot. This project does that. It was about more than investing in a place to park a vehicle; it was about creating the canvas for a truly special childhood fueled by fresh air instead of screens – a life on the lake where every day is filled with recreation and worries float away.
