We incorporate sustainability into every project. Our practices are specifically designed to do right by your pocketbook, our environment, and future generations:
Built to Last. By building homes that will stand the test of time, we are preventing unnecessary waste and material consumption.
High Performance. Our homes are built tight, well insulated, and designed to utilize modern HVAC technology to give you the best air quality possible.
Forward Thinking. We incorporate technologies such as electrical vehicle charging stations and solar panel systems to offset electrical use.
With Passive Home Institute of the US (PHIUS) certifications on both our Design and Build teams, we are building science experts from end to end throughout Whatcom and Skagit County. Specializing in custom builds since 2011, our highly individualized design-build process offers the intentionality required to build truly special projects that are both beautiful and eco-conscious.
Green building is a broad term used to describe construction practices that aim to be environmentally responsible and resource efficient, prioritizing the health of the occupants and of our planet.
Passive building is a specific strategy utilized to limit energy waste, with a key focus on thoughtful envelope construction, insulation, and air sealing. These “passive” strategies reduce heating and cooling needs and create year-round comfort.
Net-zero is a specific strategy with an emphasis on balancing energy and incorporates “active” systems, such as solar panels, to neutralize energy costs.
Green building provides superior air quality, reduces toxins, and maximizes natural light – all of which contribute to improved physical and mental health.
Green building practices reduce water consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and waste.
Green building incorporates durable materials that require less maintenance over time so you can enjoy your home instead of worry about it.
Efficiency standards have continued to tighten under WA State Energy Codes. We ensure every project is in compliance.
Rather than forcing a one-size-fits-all approach, our process is highly individualized. We consider the unique preferences of each client and the needs of each build site to present thoughtful and innovative solutions that align with the goals and budget of each project we take on in the Bellingham, WA area.
While we offer high quality, low-impact client-specific and site-specific solutions, most projects incorporate some green building strategies without a full commitment to being fully passive or net-zero. Even when they are, spending time and money on obtaining an official passive building certificate is not typically cost-effective for most homeowners and is more commonly a benefit to commercial projects with a desire to utilize their certification as part of their branding strategy, to satisfy grant requirements, or to meet other distinct needs. When full certification is a priority, our team has the credentials and skills necessary to guide the process.
When most people talk about their construction and remodel experiences, their stories are filled with disappointments, setbacks, and failures. We, of course, went into our remodel with Highline hoping for the best, and, to our delight, the best was far surpassed from Day One. The attention to detail, thoughtful communication, and knowledgeable and skilled team members made us feel extremely well taken care of. Not to mention - our house looks unbelievable! After our flawless remodel experience, we will only work with Highline in the future. Thanks, Trevor and team, for making our vision a reality!"
