North Bellingham Timber Frame

GREG ROBINSON ARCHITECT

The owner of this home has a passion for craftsman-style timber framing which served as the main driver for design. Working exclusively with Architect Greg Robinson and Highline Interiors, we created a beautiful example of Northwest Timber Frame design. Exterior features such as 6” lap siding, knotty fir soffits and natural wood accents create a cohesive and elevated aesthetic.

This home’s focus is on the living spaces, both indoor and outdoor. The wide covered porches are perfect for enjoying sunny afternoons and the French doors from the dining room allow for the perfect indoor/outdoor balance.

Old world, wide plank white oak flooring throughout the home accentuates the texture of the timber framing and knotty alder doors.

The Northwest craftsman style continues into the kitchen with alder countertops, a granite kitchen island with an anticado or leathered finish, and a Carrera marble backsplash. The rustic style of the distressed wood floors is echoed by the hammered copper apron front sink. Specialty pendants and sconces in the kitchen and stairway were custom designed by local lighting designer Mary David of La Conner, WA. Vintage materials were repurposed to create rustic lighting that complements the sand-cast cabinet pulls throughout the kitchen. All materials were hand-picked by the client with counsel from Highline Interiors.

Utilizing space was also a priority for the clients, so a creative use for the under-stairs area was devised: a custom nook for the dogs to curl up in. In addition, a cleverly constructed laundry alcove with a barn door occupies the rest of the otherwise unused space. Built-in shelving at the back door allows for a spacious mudroom entry.

The master bedroom features a well-lit walk-in closet with built-in shelves and drawers, as well as a custom barn door to maximize storage and wall space.

The master bathroom features one-of-a-kind granite vessel sinks: raw on the outside and polished on the inside. We installed a 5ft niche along the tub for convenient and ample storage, and slate walls and flooring throughout the expansive master bathroom.

With a focus on sustainability, we used natural surfacing materials made in factories using low-waste construction techniques and locally sourcing materials whenever possible. This project was a pleasure for the construction and design team from start to finish.
