Modern farmhouse style centers around simple, functional elements and practicality of spaces with warm, textural materials. Working with this as inspiration, the clients, JWR Design, and Highline Interiors designed this new home with these core elements, while at the same time modernizing the traditional elements of the home.
The exterior was designed thoughtfully, with classic farmhouse elements such as the board and batten siding, a barn roof and black mullioned windows. The simple color scheme allows the structure of the home to shine and highlights the cedar t&g soffit over the porch. The full length stairs allow for maximum use of exterior space while providing uninterrupted views of the lake.
True to farmhouse style, the kitchen is the heart of the home. The kitchen centers around a custom island with built-in banquette seating, fostering congregation and conversation while cooking. Traditional shaker cabinets are offset with modern backsplash tile and floating shelves. Butcher block counters on the island and banquette offer warmth to the space, complementing the deep blue cabinets and wide plank oak floors.
The neutral color palette continues through the home to the living spaces, bathrooms and bedrooms with the refined design accentuated by tile and fixture choices. Unique and upcycled pieces accentuate the classic, natural materials. The circular mirror in the powder bathroom was custom made from an upcycled iron ring and highlights the concrete sink, set in a vintage-style marble-topped vanity.
The simplicity of the design allows the details to tell the story of the home, from the custom shelves in the kitchen island to the trim detail around the windows and doors, translating the classic countryside structure into a modern day farmhouse. Even the small clerestory window at the peak of the roof adds an element of refinement to the facade.
