Scandinavians are believed to be some of the happiest people in the world, and their approach to architecture supports that. When we were presented with the opportunity to design and build this Scandi-inspired custom home in the Marietta neighborhood, we were all-in. The clients came to us with an exceptional vision and had great ideas for unique details that would not just match their sense of style, but would lean into the trademark Scandinavian architectural principles that create an environment ripe for contentment.
Upon driving up a winding, whimsical private driveway to the home, you are greeted with Shou Sugi Ban siding as a focal point on the front entry. This technique of preserving wood through fire is rooted in ancient Japanese practices and marries itself well to Nordic-style homes by putting an emphasis on bringing the outdoors in and integrating nature as a prominent design feature.
Once you enter the home, you are embraced by the cozy environment created through simplistic, yet highly intentional design choices that foster togetherness and connection – hallmarks of the “hygge” concept foundational to Danish culture. All of the communal spaces are connected. The kitchen, dining, and living areas flow as one, with additional living space overlooking the main area from a loft above. This concept was further embraced with the selection of a LaCanche range and ovens set crafted in France with a level of quality that makes any kitchen the kitchen to gather in.
At a modest 1,600 square feet, the home is highly functional. Every inch of the home gets used, encouraging another aspect of hygge: mindfulness. The kitchen island boasts significant storage. The master bath opens to both the master bedroom and separately to the main living space, making it suitable for day-to-day use while also adding a bathroom for guest use when hosting. There aren’t unnecessary rooms to fill with unnecessary things. Every item has its place to set the stage for a simple, innately happy life.
Perhaps the homeowners’ favorite feature of the home is the abundant use of natural light. Large windows amplify the height of the main space, beckoning in the sun. Custom shelves in the kitchen span across the windows, adding interest creating a landing for light-loving indoor plants.
An inspired home for an inspired couple. This project was an excellent opportunity for us to design and build something special.
