 Interior Design Trends for 2021

May 3, 2021

The coronavirus pandemic changed lives across the globe in many ways. Extended quarantines changed the workplace, the restaurant industry, the way we interact in public, and the way we structure our homes. Interior design trends have taken a sharp turn towards efficiency and adaptability. Multipurpose spaces are key to this year’s interior design industry. With workers and students operating out of the home, a need has arisen for adaptable spaces. The following interior design trends reflect the lessons learned from COVID-19, and work to make the house more functional for those who work from home.

  1. Kitchen Design- Large kitchen islands serve the needs of the kitchen in more ways than one. With plenty of space for cooking prep, a large island also works as a place to entertain, space for homework, and area for eating while working. This multipurpose space brings together students and adults working from home in one area. Working alone in different rooms can be isolating; a large kitchen island helps bring the family together outside of the zoom meetings!

  2. Voice Activation Technology- Recent trends show an increased interest in hands free and voice activation technology for the home. Hands-free faucets help reduce water waste, and integrate kitchen and bath technology with the rest of the home. They also provide a cleaner, more germ free space.

  3. Calm Design and Aesthetic- With so much happening in the world outside of the home, even as we enter the year of 2021, it’s no wonder we’re seeing an upward trend of calm design within the home. Lighter finishes bring about an organic feel, and larger scale materials come with less visual business and the added benefit of less grout. Integrated paneled appliances create a more seamless look in the kitchen and reduce the amount of visual clutter in the home. With more activity in the home comes a greater desire for calming interior colors. Softer whites are becoming more popular for cabinetry and interior details, as well as natural materials.

  4. Incorporated Technology- In a household dependent on technology to continue rhythms of school and work, efficient use of integration is key. Charging stations are important to maintaining flexible work spaces.  Kitchen pantries are gaining work surfaces when space allows.  We also will see more in-drawer outlets at the bathroom to hide small appliances such as hair dryers etc.

  5. Flexible Gathering Space - As more time is spent home, the need to accommodate the entire family becomes more important.  Gathering space including more seating and standing options at the kitchen island and greater living space makes for evenings can be spent together without awkward restructuring. Staying inside is the new going outside, so making sure there's enough space for everyone is an important feature of a 2021 home.

  6. Tile- What goes around comes around, and that is certainly the case for Terracotta tile this season. The classic tile design has natural and earthy undertones, with a classic spin that binds a room together. They add warmth, and will only gain more character and charm as they age.  The handmade look and beautiful color variation in the zellige style tile is continuing to be a strong trend moving forward.

  7. Exercise Spaces- As the pandemic advanced, many businesses temporarily closed their doors, including gyms. Without the traditional workout space, many people made areas in their homes into exercise rooms. Complete with cardio machines, weights, mats, or even just a yoga ball and a computer, we’re seeing an upward trend of the home gym. As we progress through 2021, anticipate more dedicated workout rooms in the home, with more equipment and better preparation.
